Why Resumes are Relevant (and will be for a long time)

Why Resumes are Relevant (and will be for a long time) So much debate about whether resumes are dying is LinkedIn (or farily-newcomer VisualCV) going to replace the boring old resume? No. Im not much of a visionary, and I dont have a crystal ball, but I cannot imagine that resumes will ever go away.   Maybe some day, in a hundred years but in my foreseeable future, I cant imagine they will go away. Why? Simple: because when you apply to a job, in general, you have to have a resume. (perhaps not true with startups, but Id guess this is true in most companies) HR and hiring managers and recruiters need your resume so they can evaluate you and compare you to other candidates. Until the hiring process/system changes, resumes will be an essential component. What do you think?   Can technology make resumes irrelevant? (thanks to David Spinks post 3 Reasons Why Resumes Should Be Irrelevant and no, Im not necessarily promoting Brazen Careerist stuff, I just found two different posts that made me want to react here :)) Why Resumes are Relevant (and will be for a long time) So much debate about whether resumes are dying is LinkedIn (or farily-newcomer VisualCV) going to replace the boring old resume? Social Media and Medical Confidentiality

Social Media and Medical Confidentiality From the get-go nurses are warned of their ethical, and contractual obligation to maintain patient confidentiality. Breaching confidentiality can lead to a variety of consequences: legal fees, monetary fines for damages, jail time, probation, and/or job termination. There are a variety mundane ways that medical professionals can accidentally break confidentiality accidentally: talk about a case in a public location or blurt out a comment about a patient to family. Even the most confidentiality focused medical professional could be in danger of breaching patient privacy by utilizing private messaging features of social media platforms to interact with their patients.  Below I will delve into how private messages could be a breach of confidentiality. Program Glitches Social media is not foolproof. Twitter, Facebook, and Google Hangouts are highly advanced and complex online services. Most of the time, the services work how they are meant to. Direct or private messages remain private and confidentiality is maintained between all parties. Occasionally one of the programs have major bugs that reveal private messages to strangers. In 2012, Facebook had a glitch that posted private messages sent on both parties Timeline. From the moment the glitch happened to the moment Facebook managed to fix the problem, any medical professional who happened to send a medical geared private message through Facebook was exposing private client information to public eyes. In 2013, Google Hangouts momentarily threw privacy out the window when the program sent messages to the wrong person. For a very brief window, any medical professional who sent medical information to a client through Gchat could have accidentally sent it to a few strangers instead. In 2008, one Twitter user’s private messages accidentally showed up in her twitter stream. The fallout was embarrassing enough for her to shut down her account, if she had been a medical professional the result could have been far worse. Safety Reports Another huge aspect that hinders confidentiality on social platforms is the fact that Facebook and Google both utilizes an algorithm that scans private messages for content that violates their terms of service. The algorithm is mostly designed to locate illegal activity like child pornography, but normal messages are sometimes flagged by the algorithm. Normally the content is moderated automatically. On a few cases, Google and Facebook need to utilize freelancers to comb through the flagged files. If a doctor’s message to their patient is flagged by Facebook or Google, chances are the content of the message will be perused by an individual hired by the company. If the individual hired has no sense of decency, they might decide to share the information on their blog, their social media account, or on an internet forum. Through a serious of unfortunate circumstances, the doctor broke confidentiality. Data Science and Big Data Facebook and Google both utilize data science mine private messages, private information, and public posts to better understand their customers. This practice, called data science, is fairly common for online retailers and websites. The goal of data science is to collect “large sets of organized data” that can then be used to locate new business opportunities and to fine tune their current business model. The problem with utilizing a product that regularly stores and analyzes their user data is that real people may eventually see private messages. And that is a huge problem for medical professionals bound to keep patient information confidential. Doctors and nurses should refrain from messaging their patients through social platforms. Unfortunately program glitches, safety algorithms, and data science collection has made programs like Facebook and Google Hangouts unsecure methods of communication. Doctors will be better served talking in person, calling the patient, or sending an encrypted email.

Protect your skin with EezySun

Protect your skin with EezySun As a one-time sufferer of skin cancer I am well aware of the need to protect my skin when I go outside.   Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to remember to apply sunscreen before heading out.   Carrying around a bottle of sunscreen in my purse already filled with everything under the sun doesn’t work for me.   All too often, I find myself already out in the sun before I remember the sunscreen. The Hunt for the Right Product I’ve hunted for the perfect sunscreen product that is convenient enough to be “on-the-go” and works for my sensitive skin.   I recently came across a product that I’ve fallen in love with.   It’s effective, portable, and even smells good. EezySun EezySun comes in a small box of 10 packets.   Each packet is a quarter ounce or so.   The packets are easy to use.   I just fold it in half and it breaks open right in the middle.   Then I can easily squeeze out the sunscreen and apply it.   The best part â€" no tearing off corners to open it, and only a single piece to throw away after I use it.   There’s plenty of product in a single packet to protect my exposed skin from the Arizona sun. Convenience Once of the reasons I like the product so much is that I can take 4-5 packets and slip them into my purse.   The flat packets take up almost no space, so no worries there!   If I forget to apply sunscreen before leaving the house, I just grab one of the packets out of my purse.    Did I mention that you can use a single hand to pop the packet and squeeze it out?   That proved to be invaluable when my husband had arm surgery and could only use one hand for 2 months! Variety The mineral-based EezySun comes in both 30 SPF and 50 SPF, in either 10-packet or 60-packet boxes.   It is a great product for anyone who needs a convenient sunscreen solution on-the-go.   I highly recommend you check it out today.

And The Best Job Search Sites Are . . .

And The Best Job Search Sites Are . . . If youve been in the ranks of those seeking employment in the last few years, you know how many job sites there are out there.  How do you know which are the best job search sites?  Do you use them all, assuming you have the time to do that?  Or is there a way to pick a couple that offer the best potential for results? Reviews.com recently did an exhaustive, and I do mean exhaustive, analysis of job sites.  Rather than even attempt to duplicate their research and review, the summary and methodology of it is below.  If you do have time for a lengthy read, the complete study is here. The only point I might add is that if you are in a more specialized niche, its worth considering very targeted sites.  For example, FlexJobs is excellent for telecommuting.  Efinancialcareers.com    narrows the focus to careers in the finance industry.   Since the objective is to find that awesome position or gig you deserve, being creative and keeping an open mind is always important. Summary of Reviews.com Site Reviews Most of us have searched for jobs online. That’s where the postings are, right? Yes, but that’s not where the hiring is done. According to the experts we talked to, the best job sites will have fresh, frequent, and relevant unique posts, as well as a scraping algorithm that helps aggregate posts from other places on the web. Best Overall Glassdoor Like Yelp, but for the job seeker. Our experts said what really gets you the job is all the metadata these sites provide: What companies are hiring? Who do you know who already works there? And, can you tell if you’d actually love that job? Thats where our top pick excels. You Should Use These Too Indeed Tons of fresh, relevant but bare-bones listings make this the Google of job sites. LinkedIn If youre on the job market, you should have a robust profile on LinkedIn â€"  and you should be working your connections. Note from the editor of reviews.com January 25, 2017  We were curious about the start-up ZipRecruiter, so we added it to our contenders list and did another round of testing. ZipRecruiter couldn’t hang; the results confirmed our top picks. How They Were Chosen A 2015 Pew Research Center report revealed that 79 percent of Americans seeking employment in the previous two years used online resources as part of their job search â€" more than personal connections or professional contacts, and twice as much as hiring agencies, traditional ads, or job fairs. Nearly one-third of job hunters said the internet was their most important resource. Convinced that finding the best job site is important? We are. Our goal was to evaluate general-appeal job sites; nothing niche or industry-specific (although we touch on a few below). We had a few priorities. We wanted to be able to filter by date. Job sites try to list the most relevant search results first, no matter when they were posted â€" but we at least wanted the option to sort for fresh posts so we weren’t sifting through the same jobs again and again. Even better: Sites that also let us view only the new posts since our last visit. Mobile apps were a major plus. That same Pew study found that of the people who owned a smartphone, 94 percent used it to research job postings, and 50 percent used it to fill out an online job application. Half of those job seekers also reported encountering “challenges navigating the job search on a mobile device” because content wasn’t displaying properly; another third “had trouble entering a large amount of text needed for a job application or had difficulty submitting the files or other supporting documents needed to apply for a job.” Mobile-friendly sites can fix the first problem. Only an app can conquer both. And we required the option for daily email alerts. Alerts deliver relevant opportunities straight to your inbox â€" no searching required. It makes the job of looking for a job one step easier. 13 job sites were put through a month-long gauntlet to find the best.  Heres the 13: Beyond CareerBuilder Career Jet Glassdoor Indeed JobIsJob LinkedIn LinkUp Monster Resume Library SimplyHired Trovit ZipRecruiter Images via pixabay.

Build a Career, Not Just Find a Job (Heres the Way) CareerMetis.com

Build a Career, Not Just Find a Job (Here's the Way) â€" CareerMetis.com Photo Credit â€" Pexels.comWhether you’re a guitarist or working in a multinational company, your job is what defines you the best. When you approach someone, you always ask them what they do, not what they wanted to or still lowkey want to do.Your job defines you, and it is essential that you find something for you in which you can pursue a career and can work on it every single day without working.People start finding jobs nowadays online, and whatever they feel like they can do, they go for it. This job is not only going to earn some money for you, but you will also be spending most of the hours of your day in that, and it will then define who you are.evalIt is not correct to choose a job without actually knowing what you want to do further. For example, if you’re in need of money, don’t just rush to the one job that you can find at that moment. It is very important to take your interests and skills into account. What you’re going to do in the future will also be based enti rely on what you’re doing now.Your today will define your tomorrow. A lot of people think that they will take one job to pay their bills and then after some time, start focusing on their primary interests. But when you get burdened with work, it becomes almost impossible to focus on anything else no matter how much it means to you and your work starts defining you then. You can’t then even stop your work there as it is already helping you pay all your bills and no one ever wants to stop receiving all the money they’re getting. It is therefore critical to choose the right path, the right career or job for yourself in the very beginning. You can follow a simple path to achieve what you want. How to Start?evalevalThis is the most asked question. Even after someone knows what he or she wants to do, he or she always keep asking, where should they start doing it? The simplest way to get started is to head out without thinking anything first.Get in and do not ever think that anyone you me et is non-beneficial. You don’t know yet how they can benefit you in your life in the future. You don’t know how you will be able to connect all these people or “use” people in the future to get to what you want. People will act like different bridges in your life which will connect you to the highway you want to get to.Don’t just find a job you’re interested in but build the relationships that you will then be able to carry out for years and who would be beneficial for you in your future life.evalIt can be tough to build connections and get recognized in the start as you won’t have anything to show or prove yourself, but if you want to succeed in the end, it is vital to keep going on consistently and keep moving forward.Don’t ever get rude to anyone or eliminate them from your life as they might be the key that you will need to unlock your next opportunity.Have positive thinking, and you will then receive a positive outcome from it. Always keep in mind, that no one g oes out there in the market to help someone else get success, they want it all for themselves, and you are the only person you will have to trust throughout this journey, no one else. The ways to grow itAfter once you have started and headed in the field, you wanted to, the next step is to grow yourself. You can then start with sending your resumes.Don’t just keep sending them out blindly as it will leave an impression on them all. See if you qualify for any work that has been enlisted and then apply for the post you think you will be able to work as.Even after some time, you can actually qualify for some other work, but you had already sent them a resume before when you didn’t and got rejected already once, it would leave a poor impression behind, and you won’t then be able to apply for the new opening then. You for sure don’t want to do that so always look out for the right position for you and apply for it only.Believe your instincts and that you can do anything, but also r emember that you don’t have to be ever overconfident about it. Take one step at a time and start from the beginning without skipping any steps.Meet the ones who have already accomplished a lot in that field and get to know about their struggles.evalTake inspiration from them and also learn and try to get help from them as much as possible. There are a lot of websites online, for example, continuing education, LinkedIn and other great sites. At times you might hear the words or phrases as “no, thanks” or “maybe later” or “we will see,” but it is important to remain consistent and keep going with what you’ve already decided and headed your way.How to Use it and GrowThis is the point where you will use all your relations to get to the point you want to. You need to keep one thing in your mind that you are asking people for favors and their help. So, you need to be bendy and act like you’re asking them not ordering them to do anything for you or to give you something.Lis ten more than you talk and have an open mind. Listen to everything and everyone about what they have got to say and then make a decision depending upon your thinking.evalYou can also consider taking their point of view but always remember that they do not view something from the point that you do.Then go for what looks the best for you. Go for the job then that you think is the most suitable and perfect for you. Your whole life will be then depending upon how you choose this job and career so don’t make a mistake while doing this.

What do you do when theres just too much work - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

What do you do when theres just too much work - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Last year I did a workshop for a client in Copenhagen?whose?main problem was that they were just way too busy. Theyre a trade union and new legislation meant that they got?an influx of new government-mandated tasks but budget constraints meant they couldnt hire more people. Consequently they were increasingly falling behind on their work, through no fault of their own. They have an internal IT system that tracks every open case and they were currently 3,000 cases behind. Even though this was due to circumstances outside of??their control, knowing that they were behind?made everybody stressed and irritable. They also?felt a responsibility towards their members every delayed?case meant that one of their union members was waiting for an important answer or potentially?werent being paid money they were owed. This situation is becoming familiar in many workplaces where there is simply more work than resources. Typically?management will bombard employees with?information showing the current lag, which only serves to make people frustrated and unhappy at work. So what can you do instead??Heres what we did in our workshop with this client. I pointed out the fact that they were currently behind by 3,000 cases. Everybody had heard that number?- it had been sent out en emails and mentioned in countless meetings. I then gave the group 30 post-its notes and told them that each post-it represented 100 open cases. I asked them to stick those post-its on the wall. It looked like this: I asked how looking at that made them feel and they said things like I feel hopeless, I feel like were failing our members, and I dont see how we can ever catch up. Then I gave them 900 more post-it notes and asked the group to stick them on the wall next to that. It looked like this: I told them that Id checked their IT system, and in the last 12 months they had completed?90,000 cases. Each post-it represents 100 cases hence 900 post-its. I asked how?they felt looking at this and they said things like I feel proud, I feel like were making a difference, and I feel hopeful. Interestingly, the year before that theyd processed 73,000 cases so they had actually become much more productive, but had never focused on that. Instead their focus was only ever on how much they were falling behind. This gave them renewed energy to tackle their increased case load. They also?came up with their own way to track progress, using a whiteboard in their cafeteria: They use it to track monthly completed cases. Theyd set a goal for March of 1,000 cases and reached? it on March 17th. Note how they had to extend the scale upward with a piece of paper because they completed much?more work than planned. In short, focusing on the work they completed (instead of?how much they were falling behind) allowed them to catch up over a period of a few months. Sadly, many workplaces do the exact opposite. When?teams fall behind, they are?constantly told exactly how much. Ive seen workplaces send out weekly emails with red graphs showing the current lag. Ive seen the same graphs hanging in offices, cafeterias and being presented in every department meeting. The problem is of course that this makes employees frustrated, hopeless and unhappy. The work of Harvard professor Teresa Amabile has shown that the most important factor that makes us happy at work is perceived meaningful progress in our work and that the absence of progress makes us unhappy. And of course we know from the research that happy?employees are more productive, creative and resilient. In short, this means that most workplaces?set up a vicious cycle: Theres too much work compared to?the available resources Employees are constantly told that theyre falling behind Employees become unhappy at work Employees become less productive Less work gets done Back to 1 So thats my challenge to your workplace: How can you highlight and celebrate the work that gets done, instead of only feeling bad over the work thats not yet completed?
